The nearly six-and-a-half-foot width creates an immersive view of industrial infrastructure.

Created in 1988, the work captures a Cleveland steel mill during the industry’s twilight. The Clay Road location placed this facility within Cleveland’s extensive industrial geography—miles of manufacturing infrastructure along the Cuyahoga Valley, rail lines, and Lake Erie shore that had made the city a steel center for over a century.

The panorama’s scale matches the massive infrastructure required for integrated steel production: blast furnaces converting iron ore to pig iron, basic oxygen furnaces refining that into steel, rolling mills shaping steel into usable forms. Each phase required enormous facilities, their combined presence creating industrial landscapes of extraordinary complexity and scale.
