Mount Plant, US Department of Energy

Miamisburg, OH, USA

Panoramic photo collage with Kodak Type-C prints

1990

31 x 26

This 31-by-26-inch near-square panorama documents the Mound Plant in Miamisburg, Ohio—another Department of Energy nuclear weapons facility whose operations contaminated surrounding land and required Superfund cleanup. The compact format focuses on infrastructure within a heavily secured installation.

Created in 1990, the work documents one of the DOE’s most significant production sites during its operational period. The Mound Plant manufactured components for nuclear weapons from 1948 until 1994, processing polonium, plutonium, and other radioactive materials while generating waste that contaminated soil and groundwater.

Like other DOE facilities, the Mound Plant operated under Cold War security protocols that prioritized production over environmental protection. Workers and nearby residents were exposed to hazards that would later require extensive remediation and medical monitoring.

The near-square format creates balanced composition for documenting facilities within a secured perimeter. The photo collage technique fragments the visible infrastructure while revealing the landscape whose contamination made cleanup a federal priority.

The Mound Plant closed in 2003 after decades of reduced operations and cleanup efforts. The site has been partially remediated and repurposed, though monitoring continues for contamination that may persist for generations. This panorama documents the facility during its operational twilight, capturing nuclear weapons infrastructure that national security had long hidden from public view.
