This 34.5-by-44.5-inch panorama documents the patio of the Ohio School Employees Retirement Fund Building in Columbus—a commissioned work capturing architectural space designed for the employees whose retirement contributions funded the building’s construction. The near-square format suits documentation of enclosed courtyard space.

Created in 2001 as a commission, the work represents Hayashi’s corporate and institutional documentation alongside her more widely known landscape and memorial work. The commission format allowed deeper engagement with architectural subjects, the client relationship enabling access and encouraging multiple studies of significant spaces.

The patio represents architectural design for human habitation: outdoor space enclosed by building walls, providing workers break-time access to fresh air and natural light within the urban office environment. Such courtyards appear throughout corporate architecture, their success depending on proportions, orientation, and landscape design that Hayashi’s panorama documents.

The photo collage technique proves particularly suited to courtyard documentation, the enclosed space naturally bounded while the multiple perspectives reveal spatial relationships from positions a single photograph could not simultaneously occupy.
